ANTONINUS PIUS, (A.D. 138-161), AE as, issued 154-5, Rome mint, obv. [ANTO]NINVS PI VS P P TR P XVIII, laureate head to right, rev. S C in exergue, Britannia seated to left on rock, head in right hand, left hand on rock, to left a round shield and eagle tipped sceptre, around BRITANNIA COS IIII, (S.1288, RIC 934, C.117). Good fine and rare.

In Antoninus Pius reign the Meaetae in the north and Brigantes in the south of Britain revolted (A.D.154) against Rome and after much bloodshed (by both sides) were defeated by the Pro-Praetor Lollius. This issue is generally only found in Britain and was issued shortly afterwards to commemorate this defeat.
