WINSTON CHURCHILL, signature as Secretary of State for War on a Mentioned in Despatches (MID) certificate for WWI named to 2nd Lt J.C.E.Botha, Supy. List, together with b&w photo (9.8cm x 14.3cm) of Botha signed, Jantjie Botha, and a small colour photo of Churchill in later years. Some light marking and toning, otherwise very fine.
Winston Churchill (1874-1965), a soldier, politician, statesman and one of the most famous individuals in modern history was Prime Minister of Great Britain for most of WWII. The MID certificate relates to a despatch from General The Right Honourable Louis Botha dated 5 April 1918 and mentioning 2nd Lt J.C.E. Botha for gallant and distinguished services in the Field. Jantjie Botha was the son of General Louis Botha, an Afrikaans Boer War hero, first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa 1910, commanded the Union troops during the South West African campaign in WWI and attended the peace conference in Europe in December 1918 as a member of the British delegation.
