GORDIAN II, Africanus, (A.D. 238), silver denarius, Rome mint, issued A.D. March - April 38, (3.38 g), obv. laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian II to right, IMP M ANT GORDIANVS AFR AVG around, rev. Virtus standing to left, with hand on shield, leaning left on spear, around VIRTVS AVGG, (S.8467, RIC 3, RSC 14, BMC 30). Lightly toned, good very fine or better and very rare.

Ex Dr V.J.A. Flynn Collection. Gordian II ruled jointly with his father Gordian I. He shared the cognomen Africanus with him (as noted on the obverse of this coin) due to a revolt in Africa that saw the citizens nominate the older Gordian as emperor. Gordian II was killed at the Battle of Carthage and left behind a library of 62,000 volumes and 22 acknowledged mistresses. All coins bearing his name are very rare as they could only have been issued between 22 March - 12 April 238 AD.
