TRENCH ART, shell casing marked on base, Japanese character, S 7/18, another Japanese character, anchor, the case crafted into a vase and engraved on the side is a coconut tree beside a hut and above is Balikpapan and below is 1st July 1945. Small split in rolled top, otherwise good fine.

Balikpapan in Borneo was the site of a Japanese prisoner of war camp.
